How to Become the Ultimate Digital Marketer

So many people call themselves digital marketers just because they sell/post something online. However, is this what really makes one a digital marketer? Well, the answer is NO it’s not. On Monday 4th May 2020, I had the honor of being a part of this conversation as the special guest on the iSpeakAfricaChat.

QUESTION 1 : WHAT ARE THE THREE THINGS SMALL BUSINESSES NEED TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT DIGITAL MARKETING TODAY?

  • Be where your consumer is, not where you think you should be.
  • Content marketing is the way to go. Give your consumers content they want/need. Things they are actually looking for. Be their solution provider.
  • Make reports your friend. They determine how your strategy changes.
  • It’s all about always having a strategy. Remember ;
  • You don’t have to be everywhere.
  • You don’t have to talk to everyone.

QUESTION 2 : SINCE THERE IS A GLUT OF CONTENT ONLINE, HOW CAN YOU STAND OUT WITH YOUR CONTENT MARKETING?

  • Understand your audience and give them content they are actually looking for.
  • Start by educating and not selling.
  • Produce content in a format your consumers would actually consume.
  • Be a person, not a robot – Use Storytelling
  • Use relatable visuals
  • Use relatable stories

In short ensure that before you put up any content you :

  • Know your goals
  • Develop Key Results to measure whether your goals are being achieved or not.
  • Understand your target audience
    • What platforms are they on?
    • What content appeals to them?
    • What do they do online?
    • When are they online.

QUESTION 3 : HOW DO YOU MOVE PEOPLE THROUGH A SALES FUNNEL?

  • Attract Them
  • Follow up and Nurture
  • Score Leads
  • Ask for More
  • Convert


The Ideal digital sales funnel looks something like this. However with consumer behavior change the funnel has to sometimes change.

However, how are things now? You have to incorporate a few steps from each model to make it work. Here are a few models you can use in your marketing mix.

QUESTION 4 : HOW CAN SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS CREATE BETTER LANDING PAGES?

  • Have a Killer Headline
  • Have Persuasive Subheadings
  • Give enough information, but be visual.
  • Call to action : Make your sign up form short
  • Ensure page is mobile friendly

QUESTION 5 : WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GETTING TRAFFIC TO YOUR LANDING PAGES?

  • Engage with your social media audience (Posts that resonate with them)
  • Make the best out of your bio section on : Instagram, WhatsApp etc (LINK ON MY BIO.)
  • Email your subscription list
  • Leverage on hashtags
  • Optimize your landing page for SEO
  • Paid Advertising

  • Helps you understand user behavior
  • Helps you understand your target audience
  • Helps you make predictions for your target metrics
  • It helps you understand where you should put your efforts (platform wise) – where is traffic coming from

QUESTION 7 : HOW CAN CONVERSION FUNNELS HELP SMALL BUSINESSES MAXIMIZE PROFIT?

By ensuring that they convert potential consumers at every stage.

  • Increase conversion in the awareness stage through ; (Blogging and PPC ads)
  • Increase conversion in the consideration stage through : (Great Landing Pages and clear Call to Action)
  • Increase conversion in the purchase stage through (Promotions and Targeted Communication)
  • Increase conversion in the loyalty stage through (Referrals, Reminders and Gratitude messages)

Every stage of the conversion funnel is an opportunity for you to close a sale without going through the whole funnel.

QUESTION 8 : ย Is (Search Engine Optimization) SEO dead?

No it’s not. There’s just too many people and brands competing to have good search engine optimization.

Nowadays one minute your top of the search, another minute your not. Even with paid ads on search engines.So you have to make an extra effort.


The other day I realized that when you Google online shopping websites in Kenya, the usual Jumia and Kilimall don’t rank first, but smaller brands do.

We’re all competing.

QUESTION 9 : SHOULD YOU HIRE DIGITAL MARKETING SUPPORT OR DO IT IN HOUSE?

To be honest it depends. Let me give you reasons why you should do either then you can decide.


Why should you do your digital marketing in house? (Staff/Business Owner)

  • It’s definitely going to be cheaper
  • You learn more since you’re doing the work.
  • The long term benefits are great

Why should you hire digital marketing support? (An agency/Expert)

  • Everyone is an expert in their own space, let a digital marketer help you navigate the space they know best.
  • Focus on running your own business
  • They have the tools
  • Ability to manage your ad more effectively
  • Marketing can’t be done part time

However most people prefer to keep it in house and this is the reason I began running my monthly masterclass to help business owners /their employees understand digital marketing in a broader perspective.
